A DIN rail is a long metal rail used for mounting electrical and industrial control equipment, such as power supplies, circuit breakers, or terminal blocks, inside a rack cabinet or housing. DIN stands for Deutsche Institut für Normung in German and in English, it translates to the German Institute of Standards. DIN rails were developed in Germany during the late 1920s and by the 1950s, DIN rails were developed into the current form and began to be widely used throughout the world. The use of a DIN rail system in industries allows for components to be mounted within close proximity of each other, which is ideal for environments with space limitations, and is a cost-effective solution as it reduces the amount wiring and space needed. There are three types of DIN rail; top hat section, C section, and G section. The Top Hat section, also referred to as TS35, measures at 35mm wide and are commonly used for mounting a wide range of electrical and industrial control equipment; circuit breakers, motor controllers, and remote I/O. There are also miniature top hat DIN rails, which measures at 15mm wide and are more commonly used for mounting smaller equipment, such as relays. The C section, also referred to as TS32, measures at 32mm wide and is used for mounting heavier equipment, such as power supplies and transformer. The G section features a deeper recess on one side with the deeper end positioned on the lower edge. The G section rail offers additional support for heavier equipment.
